The Character Strengths Inventory for Early Childhood (CSI-EC)
The Character Strengths Inventory for Early Childhood (CSI-EC) is a parent report inventory that was developed by Prof. Anat Shoshani to measure character strengths in the pre-reading stage (ages 3-6), consistent with the VIA Classification of Strengths and Virtues. The inventory consists of 96 items that measure 24 character strengths. Prior to construction of the items, the research team interviewed parents, preschool teachers and experts in the field about behaviors and situations calling for the 24 character strengths in families and preschool children’s peer groups. To ensure that the strengths scales satisfied both reliability and content validity standards, the items that were finalized for each strength scale reflect the major underlying developmentally appropriate constructs associated with the characteristics of a particular strength in the developmental literature. The CSI-EC was administered to 2,274 parents of children aged 3-6 in two large samples from Israel.
